Consequently, our lungs are a crucial organ. The lungs work nonstop inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide, which is toxic to our bodies. The work is repeatedly done regardless of the time and the events your body is undertaking. The ability to communicate and sing is facilitated through breathing. [1]

From the air that we breathe around us, the lungs absorb a few harmful elements. It is up to us to take care of our lungs. To reduce the common lung diseases that attack our lungs, it is important that we select those foods that cleanse our lungs.

The tiny air sacs that branch out from hundreds of thousands of branching tubes construct what we know as the lungs. There are over three hundred million of these tiny sacs (alveoli). The clear surface area to volume ratio manages to keep up with the respiratory demands of the human body. The alveoli membranes also maximize gaseous exchange.

The core parts of our immune system constitute the lungs. Infection- causing microbes and a large number of pollutants from our atmosphere are grabbed by the mucus in the lungs, and forced upwards by the tiny hairs (cilia), for us to swallow or cough up. Simple events like sneezing help the lungs get rid of pollutants. The contaminants and infectious diseases are howled out through the nose before they get through the sinuses.

Considering how remarkable the lungs are, we should try to take of them. Vices like smoking which destroys the cilia, a membrane that helps remove pollutants and infections. The effects of cilia destruction include clogged airways. Avoiding large pollutants, indoors or outdoors, is important. Although preventing contaminants is almost impossible, undertaking green lifestyle habbits like using an electrical stove, driving less and using less electricity could help.

Garlic and onions are not only herbs but also used to add flavor in almost every culture’s culinary dishes. Since ancient times, garlic has been used to treat ailments and prevent diseases. A controlled study has shown that people who consume garlic at least twice a week increase their ability to prevent cancer by up to 56 percent.

The nutrient alliin in garlic turns into allicin when garlic is crushed. Allicin is a fungal and bacterial infection-fighting antibiotic. The sulfhydryl and allicin act as a defense against various diseases, thus they boost your immune system.

Garlic and onions are in a category of pungent foods. Such foods reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol and fight infections, thus making them ideal for both the heart and the lungs.


Drink Water for Lung Health

This element is the base of any cleansing action and plays a huge role in health. For our blood to keep flowing to and from the lungs, clean and pure water is essential. The movements of mucus and lung hydration are processes facilitated by water intake. With the right mucus consistency, cilia movement is made easier. Thus, microbes, pollutants and toxins are easily removed. [2]

Chest congestion, an effect from diseases such as common cold or viral infections, may require medication. Water is one of the home remedies and may help reduce the symptoms. At least eight glasses of water a day contribute to the maintaining adequate functioning of the body. Chest congestion causes mild amounts of dehydration, and an added glass of water may compensate for the dehydration brought about by the extreme fever during an illness.

  • Three cups of honey
  • Four cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 14 thin slices of fresh raw ginger
  • Four quarts of water

Grapefruit contains the enzyme naringin, which inhibits the activation of a cancer-causing protein. Naringin is highly available in white grapefruit. The pink grapefruit has the antioxidant lycopene, which helps cleanse the lungs after quitting smoking.



Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and lycopene present in carrots are antioxidants that affect the lungs. They help by lowering the chances of developing lung diseases.



The vitamins B6 and C help the lungs transfer oxygen.

As seen above, what we consume may not directly affect our lungs, but the effects reach the lungs through cardiovascular activities. We are what we put in our bodies. The above foods are not the only foods that improve lung health. Consider consuming nuts, beans, and grains for a healthier advantage.
